Liverpool celebrates Olympic sport

Over 5000 people attended the Festival of Olympic Sports at Liverpool Echo Arena on Sunday, where boxing was one of over 20 Olympic and Paralympics sports offering taster sessions and encouraging visitors to have a go.

Liverpool’s Salisbury Amateur boxing Clubcoaches Alan Lynch, Peter Fitzgerald, Alan Williams and Molly Steel were on hand to deliver pad sessions and boxing demonstrations.

Salisbury ABC secretary Alan Lynch said: ‘The festival was an excellent opportunity to generate interest in the sport and get people who might never have considered it to give it a go.  As a club, Salisbury ABC was proud to be able to represent amateur boxing.’

Other sports at the festival included football, volleyball, fencing and judo, and there was a chance to meet some of the city’s past and present Olympic and Paralympics stars and find out how they get motivated to stay in shape.

Liverpool Boxing Development Officer Damian Ridpath said:  ‘The demonstrations and taster sessions delivered by the Salisbury ABC a first class showcase of the sport, for the general public and also for the many councillors and MPs in attendance.’
