Sweet science lessons for Laisterdyke pupils
School pupils in Bradford have been getting lessons in boxing skills as part of a police project.
Sessions to learn the non-contact skills of boxing have been organised at Laisterdyke School, with the help of an ABAE-qualified coach.
The project is the result of collaboration between Bradford College and the Police Community Clubs of Great Britain (PCCGB), through their ABAE-backed Bradford Boxing Development Officer Paul Porter. As part of the next phase of the Bradford schools boxing project pupils will take part in the new Contender Am-Box programme, which has been developed by the PCCGB, and is endorsed by the ABAE and the Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network (ASDAN).
Community Engagement Officer PC Yasvender Rehill, said: "Having sessions like these is a great way for me to engage with the young people at Laisterdyke School.
"It's important for them to get involved in such sporting activities as it helps them learn trust and respect for others."
ABAE Chief Executive Paul King said he strongly supported the scheme: "The ABAE is thrilled to be involved in this project. Through it a magnificent partnership has formed between the Bradford Police and College Boxing Academy and Laisterdyke School, who have been working in tandem to produce some very worthwhile outcomes."
Inspector Jonathan Pickles, of the Bradford Police and College Boxing Academy, said it was an excellent opportunity for the police to work with young people.
