Contenders meet former world champion
Recently qualified Metropolitan Police coaches got the chance to meet former world champion Tim Witherspoon when he visited the Metropolitan Police Training College this week.
The coaches were demonstrating the ABAE's newly accredited Contender Am-Box programme, which they will be delivering to over 2500 youngsters in the Greater London area in the coming holidays.
The Contender Am-box programme is a non-contact skills course which has proven extremely successful in London. The former heavyweight was so impressed that he said the USA should introduce the programme through the British Police Clubs' US sister organisation, the Police Athletic League.
Tim was also able to offer advice and gave the group a session on the pads, before signing equipment and takng time to chat to the students.
Metropolitan Police coach Constable Anna Neocleous, one of the programme organisers said: "These kids have responded brilliantly to the programme. It gives them a chance to burn off some of their energy in a controlled way, teaches them various citizenship skills and introduces them to a pathway into a great sport'.
Constable Cliff Perkins, the Met and National Police chief coach said: "The look on the faces of Contender students when Tim took a personal interest in what they were doing, was priceless. His presence at the course made a huge difference to the day, and for that and for his continued support with the programme, I would also like to thank John Murphy."
Anyone wishing to deliver the all new ABAE Accredited 'Contender Am-Box' programme should contact the Police Clubs Office on 01276 489 776. For a course pack contact the ABAE Office in Sheffield on 011422 35639.
