MBE for Bethnal Green boxing coach

Bethnal Green boxing coach Tony Burns has been awarded an MBE for voluntary service to amateur boxing.

Tony, 68, started boxing at the famous Repton club in Bethnal Green in the 1950s, and began coaching at the club in 1968. In December 2007 the ABAE recognised Tony's work in amateur boxing, awarding him the Lifetime Achievement award at the ABAE's inaugural annual awards ceremony.

Since the beginning of his career in boxing, Tony has helped train 250 national champions, including John H Stracey and Maurice Hope, and more recently Audley Harrison, who got Olympic and Commonwealth gold medals.

When he isn't training 2012 hopefuls in the gym, Tony runs a removals business.
