GB Boxing Awards update
The Youth Sport Trust has included the GB Boxing Awards as part of its Step into Sport programme for 14 to 19-year-olds.
After two very successful GB boxing tutor courses held in Loughborough Sports University, the national youth training organisation has agreed to add the course to its national course database, so that it forms part of an accredited eight-hour leadership training course.
The age limit for GB boxing tutors has been dropped, so anyone from the age of 14 years can deliver the non-contact part of the programme, as long as they are supervised, and a boxing tutor course for 14 - 19 year-olds takes place on Saturday 19th December at the Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy.
For further information and to book a place visit www.boxingawards.co.uk and click on 'Course Dates' or contact Michael Whitlock at michaelwhitelock@yahoo.co.uk mobile: 07704189077.
Q Shillingford, ABA advanced coach and director of the GB National Boxing Awards programme, explained that by lowering the age for GB boxing tutors, young people and boxers wishing to gain their first teaching qualification in amateur boxing could work alongside qualified ABAE coaches to support youngsters and newer members of their local boxing club. The awards are also included in the GB national boxing educational qualification and can be used to gain six of the twelve credits required.
The qualification is being rolled out in several schools around the country, helping to support boxing coaches and teachers wishing to further their involvement in boxing in schools.
Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy will be running an ASDAN CoPE GB Boxing Educational Qualification course workshop on Friday 5th February 2010.
Download a copy of the application form (PDF [105Kb]. Download time 24 seconds based on a 56k modem. Will open a new browser window.) to reserve a place on the course.
The Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy is based in Charter Academy secondary school in Portsmouth. 35 young 13-16-year-olds in mainstream education are at least halfway through completing the qualification, which is a CoPE Level 2 and the equivalent to a GCSE grade B. The Charter Academy also has 120 students currently working towards the awards as part of the school PE curriculum.
