Their coursework might be over for Christmas, but a tough test lies ahead for this year's student athletes as they approach the finals of the English University Championships at Coventry University on 12th and 13th December 2009.

The competition is an annual fixture, with the country's top university boxers all vying for glory. BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) have nominated their predictions for success in 2009's competition.

Hotly tipped in the Novice category is 60kg Eugene Boadi of Middlesex University. Boadi is a strong, solid boxer who also boxes for Haringey. Another novice with potential is 81kg James Burns, a Leeds Met boxer who has shown promise in recent bouts.

In the Open category, Sam Maxwell is expected to build on last year's formidable success. The Liverpool Hope lightweight is a strong and classy switch hitter who won boxer of the tournament trophies at both the English University Championship finals and the BUCS Championships last year. At 67kg is Coventry University student Jason Cuddy, who steps up from 64kg, at which he is already double English Universities champion and BUCS champion. Cuddy also took gold at the Haringey Box Cup earlier this year.

One of the forerunners in the women's category is Holly Keats of Portsmouth University, who was last year's under 5 Bouts winner and British University Champion. To find out why, watch Holly in action on youtube.
