Girls Go Box

The Amateur Boxing Association of England is the first national governing body of sport to link with the Fitness Industry Association programmes.

The FIA aims to increase physical activity participation, and one of their target groups is girls in school years 10 and 11, due to the high drop-out rates for young people of this age group.

National boxing development manager Rebecca Black and Sheffield boxing development officer Tom Gilbert ran a pilot Go Box taster as part of a Go programme showcase at Ladyzone in Sheffield, with ten girls from Silverdale School and fitness instructors from Ladyzone taking part. ABAE President and MP Rt Hon Richard Caborn also attended the session to see how the sessions could encourage women and girls to get involved in the sport.

Rebecca said: "The Go programme provides six weeks of physical activity, where girls are taught by a fitness instructor at an FIA member club. The FIA's main outcome is for the girls to continue with their activities after the six weeks, so exit routes are essential - whether it be at the FIA member club or a sports club."

Information on boxing clubs was distributed following the session, and it is now hoped that Go Box tasters will be included in other Go programmes across the country.
