Olympians get in gear for European Championships
The GB Boxing Programme is hosting boxers from four nations (France, Ireland, Sweden and Norway) at their base at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield between 28th October and the commencement of the European Championships in Liverpool on 6th November.
In total 22 foreign boxers are present at the camp. Olympic medallists light heavyweight Kenny Egan (IRL) and light welterweight Alexis Vastine (FRA) join up with British Olympians Tony Jeffries, Joe Murray and Khalid Yafai. The teams will join up for three technical sparring sessions and three open spars before travelling together to Liverpool on the 5th November.
GB Head Coach Terry Edwards welcomed the teams at a meeting on Tuesday evening. He emphasised that over the last 12 months the teams had come together on several occasions to joint train (together with Italy and Kazakhstan). He suggested that it was no coincidence the teams from Ireland (1S 2B), Italy (1G 1S 1B), Great Britain (1G 2B), France (2S 1B), Kazakhstan (1G 1B) and Sweden with two qualifiers had all performed well in Beijing and urged the partnerships to continue.
