Commonwealth Youth Games - day two
James Dickens and Iain Weaver will join Thomas Stubbs in the next rounds of the Games, having won their bouts in style this afternoon.
James Dickens beat Olivier Laviglante of Mauritius in his flyweight contest today in Pune. Dickens allowed the Mauritian only one point, in the third round, and the final score was 10:1 to the Englishman. He will now box Australian Kyle Freiberg in Wednesday's quarter finals. Martin Webb said of the southpaw: "James made a confident start with his effective counter punching taking him to a 9-0 lead after the opening two rounds. He then used his ring savvy to keep out of trouble and see out the contest, reserving his energy for tomorrow's quarter final."
Iain Weaver beat Stefan Gouveia of Guyana in his preliminary featherweight bout, stopping his opponent only one minute and twenty two seconds into the first round. Martin Webb's verdict: "In this all-southpaw contest, Ian couldn't have been sharper. It was a devastating performance. A three punch combination floored the Guyanan in the opening minute and another barrage at 88 seconds forced the referee to halt proceedings in favour of Iain."
Tomorrow (Wednesday) will be a day of action, with all six boxing in the quarter finals.
