Winning women off to Worlds
England are represented at the Women's Amateur Boxing World Championships for the first time this month. The team, led by Amanda Groarke, are for Ningbo in China, where 45 nations and 237 competitors are taking part.

This is a momentous time for women's boxing, both in England and internationally. The Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) recently submitted their proposal to include events for women in the Olympic Games to the International Olympic Committee. A decision will be made towards the end of 2009.
The four competitors representing England are:
Nicola Adams
Competing weight: 54kg
Age: 25
Club: Bradford Police and College Boxing Academy
Achievements: Gold in 2004 and Silver in 2007 in the Witch Cup, Bronze in the Ahmet Comert Cup in 2007. European silver medallist.
Started boxing when she was 12.
Ranking: Third in the world
Some of Nicola's opponents at the World Championships include: Lorna Weaver from France (ranked fifth) and Karolina Michalczuk from Poland (rated number one in the world and current World Champion silver medallist).
Lucy Abel (team captain)
Competing weight: 57kg
Age: 29
Club: Royal Navy
Achievements: European Union gold medallist
Started boxing 3 years ago because she wanted to lose weight and get fit.
Some of Lucy's opponents at the World Championships include: Sofiya Ochigava from Russia (ranked number one in the world), Ingrid Egner from Norway (ranked fourth in the world), and Karolina Graczyk from Poland (ranked seventh) along with current gold medallist, Yum Kum Ju DPR of Korea.

Natasha Jonas
Competing weight: 63kg
Age: 24
Club: Rotunda ABC, Liverpool.
Achievements: Silver medallist in the 2007 and 2008 European Union Championships

Ranking: Fourth in the world
Some of Natasha's opponents at the World Championships include: Current title holder and world ranked number one boxer Klara Svensson from Sweden, and Lucie Bertaud from France (ranked 2nd), Larisa Rosu from Romania (ranked fifth) and Yvonne Rasmussen from Denmark (ranked seventh in the world).

Amanda Coulson
Competing weight: 66kg
Age: 25
Club: Hartlepool Catholic ABC, in Hartlepool within the Tyne, Tees and Wear region
Achievements: Silver medalist at the European Union Championships in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Gold, silver and gold medallist at the Ahmet Comert Cup in 2007, 2008 and 2009 respectively.
Started third in the world at 63kg
Some of Amanda's opponents at the World Championships include: Current silver medallist Oleksandra Kozlan from the Ukraine, Irina Poteyeva from Russia (ranked fourth), Marichelle de Jong from Holland (ranked sixth), Csilla Csejtei from Hungary (ranked seventh), Ronja Holgersson from Sweden (ranked eighth).
