Groves Grabs Gold
Zlatko Hrbic Tournament Results - Croatia
GB Development Coach Jim Davison took a small team comprising of Luke Campbell (54kg, St Pauls ABC, Hull), Celebrity Big Brother Star Anthony Ogogo (69kg, Triple A ABC, Lowestoft), George Groves (75kg, Dale Youth ABC, Notting Hill, London) and Obed Mbwakongo (81kg, Fisher and Downside ABC, Bermondsey, London) to this senior tournament. The squad were looking to build on their international senior experience. Due to the success of the GB Podium squad, their paths to Beijing are blocked by Joe Murray, Billy Joe Saunders, James DeGale and Tony Jeffries respectively. However, there is plenty to play for as these aspiring London 2012 Olympians look to hone their skills and gain promotion to the top squad.
On their return the boxers are expected to enter the Senior ABA Championships.
Saturday 8th March
George Groves (75kg, Dale Youth) showed his class, shrugging off the disappointment of having his Olympic dream ended by club mate Jame DeGale's qualification in Pescara last week. He won a gold medal at the Zlatko Hrbic tournament this weekend. He defeated Russian middleweight Alexy Kadochnikov controlling the bout from start to finish 35:16.
Fellow finalist Luke Campbell (St Pauls ABC, Hull) lost out 10:21 to local favourite Mirsad Ahmeti and had to be content with a silver medal.
Jim Davison GB development coach said: "Both performances were of a very high quality. Well done to the boxers."
