Final results
54KG Simon Baker (England) lost to R.Gilmanov (Russia)
Simon faced a very highly rated Russian opponent and boxed with great skill and speed. He lost on the outclassed rule in the second however that does not do his efforts justice as many of his crisp combinations rocked the Russians head back but did not register.
59 KG Mark Baker (England) lost to S.Nitkovskiy (Russia)
Mark faced the Russian number one who was their most fancied medal prospect. The Russian had blasted out of the ring all before him but Mark more than matched him. The entire crowd were on their feet to see the English boxer put in the performance of the Tournament but just fall short of the top honours. He lost 22 points to 18 although most of the neutrals felt he had done enough.
Semi Final Results
40KG Jez Smith (England) lost to S.Guseynov (Russia)
The Russian boxer took the bout to Jez from the opening bell and forced him back with some sharp combinations to open an early 5 point lead. Jez responded well and the bout was warming to a good contest when the referee stepped in following a Russian attack and gave Jez a count. A distraught Jez Smith was out of the contest before it really got a chance to develop. RSC 1
41.5KG Thomas Ward (England) lost to M. Dzabrailov (Russia)
Tom went out of the tournament to a very scrappy contest that did neither boxers obvious skills justice. The Russian was forced to use spoiling tactics to stop Tom who along with the rest of the English team has left its mark on this tournament. Both boxers received public warnings in the third round but the spoils went to the Russian 23 points to 10.
44.5KG Alfie Price (England) lost to M.Kharchikov (Ukraine)
This contest was over with the first serious attack from either boxer in the first 40 seconds. The Ukrainian moved in with a body shot, Alfie pushed away smartly but stumbled on his own feet on to the ropes. To the dismay of all of the English party the referee stepped in with a count and ended the contest. To his credit Alfie acted with a dignity that was behond his years and accepted the decision.
54KG Simon Baker (England) beat T.Milorad (Serbia)
The powerful English boxer took the bout to the Serb in an effort to leave nothing to chance and soon opened up a 6 point lead in the first round. Excellent footwork backed up with some sharp three punch combinations enabled Simon to restore pride for the team and end the bout in the second round on the outclassed rule . 17 points to 2
59KG Mark Baker (England) beat A.Mitic (Serbia)
Mark completed a Baker double for the team when he beat his opponent 10 points to 2.
The English boxer having waited all week for his chance to shine took his opportunity with style. He dictated the bout with powerful two handed, front foot attacks that the Serb had no answer for.
65KG Simon O Driscoll (England) lost to M.Grechanov (Ukraine)
Simon took his opponent all the way in a lively skillful bout that had the crowd on its feet from the first bell. The lanky Ukrainian used his long reach to score with some powerful straight shots and open up a 6 points to 2 lead in the first. Simon picked it up in last two rounds and forced his opponent back with powerful accurate scoring. Sadly for the English captain the Ukrainian boxer used good footwork to frustrate him and the bout ended 11 points to 9 in the Ukrainians favour.~

Wednesday 23rd July 2008 (Late Bouts)
38.5KGMarc Leach (England) lost to A.Melkonyan (Russia)
Marc boxed his heart out for his country and went out 15 points to 12 to a very good boxer who will go on to win gold in this division. He can take heart from a superb performance that on another day could have gone his way.
41.5KGThomas Ward (England) beat Laslo Zold (Hungry)
Tom was leaving nothing to chance in this bout and set about dismantling his opponent from the first bell. He stopped a good performer from Hungry in the second round 17 points to 2 on the outclassed rule . A quality performance from Tom
48KG Romario Wallace (England) lost to I.Kharitonov (Russia)
Romario faced a tall, skillful opponent in the Russian and put in the performance of the tournament so far for the team. He was brave and using skills that were behond his years he took the bout to the Russian. The scoreline of 12 points to 7 against Romario does not tell the tale. At the conclusion of the bout the Russian National coach acknowledged the fact that his champion had been pushed to the wire and received the decision over Romario.
50KG Franky Smith (England) lost to A. Mikhailau (Belarus)
Franky struggled to get going in this bout and found his opponent a bit to evasive on the night and went down 14 points to 2. It was Franks second bout of the tournament.
54KG Simon Baker (England) beat N.Varbanov (Bulgaria)
Simon turned in an explosive performance and was not letting this one go to the judges . Using clever powerful combinations he stopped the Bulgarian in the first on a count. It was just the tonic the team needed on the night.
Boxing in the semi finals tonight will be Jez Smith , Thomas Ward, Alfie Price, Simon Baker, Mark Baker and Simon O Driscoll. This places England only behind Russia with 15 places in the semi, Ukraine with 12 and Turkey with 7. A fine effort from a good squad .
Wednesday 23nd July 2008 (Early Bouts)
40KG Jez Smith (England) beat O.Yavuz (Turkey)
Jez boxed with heart of a lion and skills to match to over come a good Turkish boxer 18 points to 3 . Stopped on the 15 point outclassed rule
43KG Shane McDonagh (England) lost to K.Samusenko (Ukraine)
Shane struggled to come to terms with the untidy Ukrainians style and got caught on the ropes to end the first round 9 points to 3 down. Shane battled away but was stopped in the second round with the score at 19 points to 4. This scoreline does not reflect Shanes efforts in the second round.
44.5KG Alfie Price (England) beat Y.Celik (Turkey)
Alfie got the team back on track with a top class performance. He won the first round 7 points to 1 thanks to some great footwork and accurate punching. He followed up some good advice from his cornermen, Englands Chris Cain and Les Brooking with a dominating finish to the bout winning by a margin of 16 points to 3.
62KG Patrick Miller (England) lost to V. Mykhaylov (Ukraine)
Patrick was desparately unlucky to lose to a very contencious desision to the much fancied Ukrainian. Patrick entered the final round 11 points to 3 down after dominating the bout. He went looking for the stoppage in the third but despite having his opponent in trouble on three occasions, the count did not come. He went down 17 points to 7. Patrick was a credit to himself and his country throughout the bout and after the desision.
65KG Simon O Driscoll (England) beat A.Coyle (Ireland)
After a tight first round that ended one point all, both boxers sprung into life in an exciting second round. Simons superior strengh ended the bout in the second with a powerful straight left, right hook combination that earned Coyle a count and O Driscoll the bout. The score was 7 points to 6 in Simons favour at the time. A fine Captains performance.
Boxing tonight are: Marc Leach 38.5KG, Thomas Ward 41.5KG, Romario Wallace 48KG, Franky Smith 50KG and Simon Baker 54KG. Mark Baker received a bye to the semi finals and will box on Friday.

46KG Ryan Fillingham (ENGLAND) LOST to Tigran Uzlyan (RUSSSIA)
Ryan was retired by his corner at the end of the second round with a swollen eye with a slight nick. He was down on points by a margin at this stage. No serious damage to the boxer when assessed at the end of the bout.
50KG Franky Smith (ENGLAND) WON against Evgeny Martynenko (ISRAEL)
Franky won with what probably the bout of the night against a well fancied and skillful opponent. 15 points to 14. The bout swung one way then the other but Franky was a deserved winner.
