A First for Western Counties

Lydney ABC and the ABA have been working hard over the last two years to create an ABA Clubmark Award which has finally come to fruition.

Lydney received the first ever Boxing Clubmark Award at a presentation ceremony on Monday 18th February.

Keith Walters, the ABA chairman made the presentation to the club on behalf of the ABA and was able to confirm that the national Clubmark Programme would be fully operational from 10th March (see the ABA Website).

Clubmark is a nationally recognised kite-mark running across most of the sports and denotes that your club:

  • Operates a progressive development programme for all age groups
  • Operates a safe environment with qualified coaches and volunteers who have completed CRB checks and, in a few cases, attended some key courses

Many public funding agencies are beginning to prioritise Clubmarked clubs for future funding and for those who have achieved the kite mark there may be many advantages in the coming years.

For further details of Clubmark including a registration of interest contact Roger Eady who will ensure that your club is registered on the programme and that you receive help and support in acquiring the kite mark. Incidentally, National Smelting ABC and Broad Plains ABC have already registered an interest!

Harry Scott has finally received national recognition. Harry was voted ABA Coach of the Year at the Award Ceremony in December 2007.

This was justified recognition for his long and devoted service to amateur boxing and to the many superb boxers he has produced.

Our sincere congratulations to Harry and his Swindon Club, Walcott ABC.

Coach Education

For those of you who plan to take your Assistant Coaches or ABA Coach Award this year the next Course is planned for the weekends of:

  • 7th/8th June
  • 21st/22nd June
  • Venue: Broad Plain Boy's Club
  • Cost: to be confirmed

One - Day Refresher Course: either the 7th or 8th June

For those coaches who have not attended a course in the last 3 years, a refresher course is essential to maintain your award.

Don't Forget

Applicants for these courses require:

  • A valid CRB check before applying
  • A current First Aid Certificate prior to attendance on the course
  • Endorsement from your club
  • A good standard of personal practical skills, including padwork

Ensure that your CRB is carried out now!

Any one interested in the course please contact Steve Brooks

First Aid Course

Many local authorities and sporting organisations run First Aid Courses but for those who prefer a "boxing environment" Dennis Stinchcombe will be returning from his period of rehabilitation following knee surgery and will direct a First Aid Course in Bristol sometime after the Easter break.

  • Contact Dennis for further details.

Junior & Senior Championship Forms

Now available from Steve Brooks or possible to download from ABA website. Please remember the closing date is two weeks prior to the first round. Also remember the weight you enter your boxers at on the form is the weight they are entered at. There is no changing weight. This was passed as part of the Western Counties constitution last year; it has been in operation in Devon for some years and has worked well. It allows our clubs in the Channel Islands not to have to make unnecessary journeys to just weigh in and also for the host club to arrange supporting bouts if necessary.

Officials needed.

We are looking to train some more judges and recorders. All Clubs should be able to provide at least one official if considering putting on a show. If you have anyone who would be interested in training as a judge, timekeeper or recorder, please give your or their name and contact details to your divisional secretary or myself. Could I also ask, when putting on a show, could you also include a request for new people to become officials, they can see the OIC at the show if they are interested and there details can then be forwarded.

The Annual Conference & Workshop

Last year our Annual Conference & Workshop was the precursor to so many new initiatives including our monthly Regional Squad Training Programmes under the direction of Kevin Hay and his team of coaches and the qualification of another 20 judges.

We are awaiting the Royal Navy Sponsorship from the ABA and, as soon as this money arrives we will be in a position to organise our second annual conference.

Details to follow as soon as we receive the funding.
