Coach development update

The ABAE's National Club and Coach Manager Matthew Williams explains the recent developments in UK coach education and what this means for new and existing coaches.

UK COACHING CERTIFICATE (UKCC)

- The ABAE is currently working to develop a new series of qualifications that will be endorsed by UKCC.
- UKCC is the coaching-industry standard for coaching qualifications, and sports that have UKCC qualifications have increased opportunities to gain funding for coach education.

Process

- There will be a phased introduction of UKCC endorsed ABAE qualifications at levels 1-3 over the next 2 years.
- Work has commenced on endorsement of the Level 1 Award in Coaching Boxing.  This will replace the existing Assistant Coach qualification and is scheduled for roll-out in the second half of 2009.
- The ABAE are required to work through 2 endorsement processes:

1. The first is with sports coach UK and is concerned with meeting standards relating to the content of the course
2. The second is with Coachwise 1st4Sport and relates to meeting required standards for the ABAE to become an approved centre for delivery of UKCC qualifications.

How this will benefit coaches

- The new courses represent a significant commitment on the part of the ABAE to provide coaches with high quality coaching courses.
- The content of the courses will reflect current thinking in both sport science and coaching science.
- There will be a commitment to training Coach Educators and Coach Assessors to deliver and assess the new material, ensuring that we are meeting required quality standards for the delivery of coach education.  This will be of benefit to all coaches attending the new qualifications.
- All coaches that attend the courses will receive a high quality coaching manual and DVD.

What it means for existing coaches

- As each course is introduced existing coaches at the equivalent level will be provided with the opportunity to attend a session that provides information on the new content.  They will also have the opportunity to receive a copy of the new manual and DVD.
- We will not have specific details of these sessions until we have gone through the endorsement process for the new qualifications.  We will provide further information once we have it.

UK COACHING FRAMEWORK (UKCF)

- The ABAE is one of 31 governing bodies committed to the implementation of the UKCF, which is led by sports coach UK and has a vision to create: "A cohesive, ethical, inclusive and valued coaching system where skilled coaches support children, players and athletes at all stages of development in sport; and which is number one in the world by 2016".
- As part of our commitment to the UKCF we are required to complete a Coaching Delivery Plan to identify key areas of development for the coming years.
- To inform this process the ABAE will be seeking the views of coaches via a formal consultation exercise.  Further details will be posted on the website shortly.

For further information on any of these developments please contact Matthew Williams, ABAE National Club and Coach Manager, on 07515 333032 or at matthew.williams@abae.co.uk
