Mixed fortunes from the Beijing Worker's Gymnasium this morning, as welterweight Billy Joe Saunders and light heavyweight Tony Jeffries each took to the ring.

Tony Jeffries

Saunders boxed well against Cuban Carlos Banteaux but was unable to close a widening gap and the Hertfordshire teenager lost 13-6. Billy Joe is now looking towards the London 2012 Olympics, and today's performance gave a glimmer of an even more exceptional future talent. Banteaux is now tipped for a gold medal.

Tony Jeffries won a close bout against Eleider Alvarez of Colombia shortly afterwards, ending 5-5 on points and prompting a countback. He'll now box Imre Szello, of Hungary. The pair met only two months ago at the EU Championships in Poland, when Jeffries won 12-11.

Bradley Saunders boxes Frenchman Alexis Vastine later today.
