Harwich summer course a success

.

Harwich Amateur Boxing Club have staged a second successful 'learn to box' nursery class at their gym headquarters in Dovercourt.

The session, which is run in conjunction with Tendring District Council's spring holiday sctivity programme and is sponsored by boxing equipment supplier Boxfit UK, proved a great success, attracting a record number of 34 young hopefuls aged 8 to 14, who learnt the core skills of the sport in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.

Head coach Martin Webb, assisted by several fellow qualified club coaches and helpers, taught the pupils a number of basic skills including footwork, defence, punch combinations and an understanding of the rules.

Tendring Councillor Pierre Oxley has been delighted with the positive response: "This is the first time we have financially assisted clubs to lay on activities as part of our summer activity programme. Judging by the positive reaction to the boxing classes, it has proved a success. It's great to see so many youngsters enjoying themselves and learning new sporting skills within a regulated and safe environment."

At the end of the course attendees were presented a medal for attendance by Tendring District Council sports development officer Chris Holmes.

Boxer Hayden Orr received a brand new pair of boxing gloves, after being pronounced the boxer to have improved the most over the 5 days, while Charley Prosser received a Boxfit t-shirt for putting the most effort in over the duration of the course.

During the course boxers undertook and successfully passed the ABAE preliminary award, two boxers passed the standard award and Patrick Allen-Cripps successfully achieved the bronze award.
