Bantamweight Joe Murray (54kg) lost to China's Yu Gu in a packed-out Worker's Stadium this morning, with a final score of 17-7.
Joe has boxed Yu Gu twice before, losing once to him on the China man's home turf but then beating him in the World Championships last year. Unfortunately Mighty Joe's hopes of a medal in this Games are now over.
The GB Boxing team's medal hopes are now in the hands of the six remaining boxers: super heavyweight David Price has his first bout tomorrow against Russian powerhouse Islam Timurziev, while on Thursday, light heavyweight Tony Jeffries will face Columbia's Eleider Alvarez, and Bradley Saunders and Billy Joe Saunders will take to the ring for a second time, respectively boxing Frenchman Alexis Vastine and Carlos Banteaux of Cuba. Flyweight Khalid Yafai will take on Cuban boxer Andris Hernandez Laffita in his first bout of the contest on Saturday, followed on the same day by middleweight James DeGale, who follows up his preliminary win when he boxes the USA's Shawn Estrada.
