Successful funding bid a boost for Smelters

.

Sport England have awarded The National Smelting Co Amateur Boxing Club the grant they desperately needed to build a new boxing and fitness gym in partnership with Avonmouth Rugby Club.

Thanks to Sport England South West's Community Club Development Programme the club's three hundred-plus membership, who until now have been training in a small and chilly wooden hut, will soon have access to state-of-the-art facilities including two training rings, twenty punch bags and balls, an aerobic studio area, core strength work stations and mirrored walls.

The new portable steel boxing and multi purpose gym facility will benefit members of both the NSC, the adjoining rugby club and residents of Avonmouth. This is great news for Avonmouth as the area's nearest sporting facilities have closed and the club is an integral part of the community. The new facilities will be used by over a thousand people weekly.

Additionally, the club has developed links with two schools - Bradley Stoke and Patchway. The new facilities will help them expand on their work delivering the ABAE boxing awards to pupils and work towards Clubmark accreditation.

Head coach Garry Cave summed up the club's delight: "To say that it's fantastic news for us would be an understatement. I feel like we've won the lottery".

The venue will also serve as a Western Counties squad training venue, for hosting tournaments and championships. To view the club's plans at their website click here.
