Fitzroy launch for World hopefuls
Fitzroy Lodge ABC (Lambeth, London) provided the ideal setting for the ABAE World Championship 2007 press conference. Tucked under one of the railway arches near Waterloo Station, it has as authentic an atmosphere as any boxing gym could hope for. Add to this the excitement and anticipation of 13 boxers about to embark on the trip of a lifetime to the World Championships (Olympic Qualifier) in Chicago, a posse of respected boxing hacks and you have quite a buzz. Fitzroy Lodge Coach Mick Carney was on his usual top form as host and kept the tea coming throughout! A big thank you to Mick and the club for providing the venue.
Khalid Yafai, Stephen Smith and Tony Jeffries
The boxers, Keith Walters (Chairman), Terry Edwards (GB Head Coach) and Ted Goreham (ABAE Director and Team Manager) were on hand to answer the questions of the assembled journalists. The press conference also provided the opportunity to welcome the new entrants to the top squad (Tyson Fury, Michael Maguire, Billy Joe Saunders, Khalid Yafai and Thomas Stalker) and inform the media of their achievements to date and future potential.
The current GB Podium squad
The squad will now train in London for another day before heading out to Rocky's home town of Philadelphia for a week of sparring and training. Then on to Chicago for the weigh-in and preliminaries on the 23rd October.
The Big Men (David Price, Danny Price, Tyson Fury and Stephen Simmons)
Results will be updated regularly so keep logging on to the ABAE website to follow the progress of the squad.
