Noble Art At The Tate
The boxing and art worlds collide on July 21st, when an amateur exhibition boxing match involving London boxing clubs is staged as part of an exhibition by Panamanian UK-based artist Humberto Vélez.
A performance and a series of multidisciplinary workshops in collaboration with Southwark's sports, youth and community groups will take place on the bridge above the Turbine Hall on 21st July 2007. Fisher ABC, Fitzroy Lodge ABC and Lynn Athletic Club will be joined by music from MIC Assassin and champion dance group Flawless.
The project will work with young boxers, disadvantaged young people and communities living in Southwark. The Fight is based on the national sport and educational experience of mentors, coaches and sports people who use boxing and vocational Programmes for working with young people who have been excluded from schools and young offenders. It is especially about recognising boxing as a great Olympic and people's sport.
The idea also relates to artist Humberto Velez's background in Panama- where he was born-, and where boxing is a major sporting institution, with Panamanian boxers being amongst the best in boxing history. Boxing in Panama and in the UK, is particularly a tool for young working class people that helps them to improve themselves and to be out of trouble, and is most of the time supported by their communities.
The boxing match
The clubs will arrive in two groups, from the river on the Tate's boat and by the Millennium Bridge coming from St Paul's Cathedral. The two groups will enter the building by different gates and they will meet in the Turbine Hall. The London and English Boxing community, the families of the boxers and local groups of Southwark will be especially invited to the event.
The workshops - March - July 2007
In the run up to this event, Humberto Vélez will develop a series of workshops with a focus on cultural and sports management, music, radio and dance for all the youth groups that will take part. A one day general rehearsal for the sailing and the march/parade will be part of the programme.
