It's Tammer Time!
The team of seven funded boxers closed out a scintillating year for the GB Boxing squads by emerging as top nation from the Tammer Tournament, Tampere, Finland.
The team, headed by coaches Dave Pocknell and Nigel Davies, finished the week as top team, narrowly beating the French into second place. Danny Price was awarded Boxer of the Tournament following his excellent win against a Russian. The total medal haul for the team was three gold (Maguire, Saunders, Price), one silver (Stalker), and one bronze (Mbwakongo).
Sunday's finals results
54Kg Michael Maguire won 23:16 against Fininsh boxer Matti Koota, claiming his first senior international gold medal in his debut multinations.
57kg Tom Stalker lost to experienced French featherweight Khadafi Djeikhir in his third bout of the week.
69Kg Billy-Joe Saunders beat up-and-coming French star Jaoid Chiguer 25:9 to add gold to the title he won at the Commonwealth Federations Championship in July. Billy-Joe is still undefeated at senior international level.
91Kg Danny Price beat Russian Jevgen Romanov (RUS) 17:14, impressing sufficiently to be awarded Boxer of the Tournament trophy.
The team put the icing on the cake of what has been a vintage year for both the cadet, junior and senior ranks.
Team comprised of:
48Kg: Paul Butler, Vauxhall Motors ABC, Ellesmere Port
Unfortunately Paul learnt on the eve of departure that he would have to box at 51kg due to lack of entries at light flyweight. However, keen as ever to box Paul was happy to adjust his diet and travel with the squad.
54Kg: Michael Maguire, Kettering school of boxing, Peterborough
After his devastating victory against David Clarke (USA) at York Hall a fortnight ago Maguire is keen to advance his status as a top senior international.
54Kg: Chris Jenkins, Cwmgors ABC
Promising Welsh youngster Jenkins looking to add to the international scalps he claimed in Canada this Autumn.
57kg: Tom Stalker, St Aloysius ABC, Liverpool
Looking to prove he can manage the transition to featherweight having won gold (and boxer of the tournament) at the Commonwealth Feds in July at lightweight. With World Champion Frankie Gavin occupying the Olympic berth at 60kg Tom is forced to look for opportunities elsewhere.
69Kg: Billy-Joe Saunders, Hodaston ABC, Herts
Exciting young welterweight prospect plans to continue his undefeated run at senior international level. With a gold at the Commonwealth Feds and a third round stoppage against USA at York Hall Billy-Joe could surprise a few people at this established event.
75Kg: George Groves, Dale Youth ABC, London
George is keen to follow-up his recent silver medal in Macedonia with gold in Finland.
81Kg: Obed Mbwakongo, Fisher ABC, London
Confidence is high for talented junior Obed with a recent Gold in Macedonia and strong win against USA.
91Kg: Danny Price, Westway ABC, Scarborough
The elder statesman of the trip wasn't initially selected to travel, but was so keen to box that GB Head Coach Terry Edwards relented, allowing Danny the opportunity to continue his winning streak that started at the 'Good Luck' Olympic test event in Beijing and saw him outbox American Quantas Graves recently. A good tournament should further boost Danny's confidence as the first European zone Olympic qualifier approaches in February 2008 (Pescara, Italy)
