Archive News

.

Since November 2006 the ABAE has committed itself to developing a national amateur boxing archive a great deal of progress has been made.  With a target date set as 2012.  Highlights have included:

  • appointment of a part time archivist to help prepare a National Lottery submission seeking government funding to support the project going forward
  • establish a collection policy
  • publishing the existence of the project and seeking donations.

The response so far has been fantastic.  The ABAE now has over 1,000 items of amateur boxing history which are listed on our website.  These include:

  • Original 1880 minute books setting out how the sport was established and then developed up to 1950.
  • The 1882 and 1883 ABA Heavyweight Cups presented to H. Dearsley.
  • Programme of the 1891 Senior ABA Finals.
  • 1908 Olympic Games Silver Remembrance Medal.
  • 1920 Olympic pin badge from the Antwerp Games.
  • 1934 London Commonwealth Games (then the British Empire Games) Official jewel and games programme.
  • 1939 European Championship programme.
  • 1958 Schools Final programme.
  • Programmes of the 'Stable Lads', National Miners, National Dock, Police National Championships.
  • 1979 World Junior Championship programme.

The archive has received many donations of books programmes, documents, trophies, medals and certificates.  The collection is growing but needs everybody's support to make it truly remarkable.

A new archive website will be launched in the autumn of this year including:

  • catalogue details of every single item
  • a photo of every item
  • a biography of every Olympian and European Champion
  • a biography of leading officials (from 1880) and every boxer to have won (57 or more ABA Senior titles).

If you have any queries or wish to know more you can contact the ABAE directly on this issue by email archive@abae.org.uk, telephone 0114 223 5654 or visit here to look at the collections that we have so far been collected and donated.
