Students get minds in gear for BUCS Championships
With the British Universities and Colleges Championships getting underway this week, Portsmouth University boxer Brian Ogweno got some preparation in at a local show, as he took on Heart of Portsmouth's Gareth Dodd.
Proving that boxing really is like a game of chess, Brian used a mixture of brain and brawn to overcome his opponent ahead of the student calendar's biggest boxing event of the year.
Brian is one of 15 students currently set to represent Portsmouth University in the annual championships.
The team has a lot to live up to - they enter the championships as favourites after the continual success over the past 3 years.
Portsmouth University's team is as follows: Novices - Syed Fahat 54kg, Rupish Nayee 57kg, Terry Singh 60kg , Paul Mitchell 67kg, Callum Lewis 71kg, Yannick Fog 75kg, Bruce Houston 81kg, Bash Natwari 86kg. Over 10s - Kingsley Walker 60kg, Brian Ogweno 67kg, Hish Alabadey 71kg, R Colquohoun 81kg, George Georgakakis 91kg. Camille Ducoutomany 48kg, Holly Keats 60kg.
Portsmouth and English University Boxing coach Wayne Gardiner said: "University boxing has increased tenfold in the past four years, with the standard rising dramatically. There were over 120 entrants this year.
"I will be keeping an eye out for up-and-coming talents to represent the English University team, which has also been going from strength to strength."
More details about the BUCS Championships can be found on the BUCS website (below). The event takes place from 10-13 March and encompasses a wide variety of sports.
