Gloves on for Portsmouth principal
Boxing is now so popular in one Portsmouth school that even the principal is donning boxing gloves.
Students at the Charter Academy have completed the GB Boxing Tutor course as part of their ASDAN studies and many are even going on to become junior boxing officials and get involved in other aspects of the sport.
Dame Sharon Hollows, Principal of Charter Academy, told the ABAE that she was impressed by the positive effect boxing has had on her pupils: "Having boxing on the school curriculum has had a massive impact on the pupils in the school. Boxing has changed a lot of our youngster's lives; we have seen a complete turn around in behaviour, attitude, confidence and, most of all, self esteem.
"What has really impressed me is the fact that a lot of the Charter students are now "young leaders" - ABA Boxing Tutors, and are helping out in the after-school clubs and at the HOP Boxing Academy. Even my school teachers have been recruited into the boxing training as part of early morning activities - I am intending to have my first boxing lesson very soon."
Keith Walters, the Chairman of Amateur Boxing Association of England, visited the Charter Academy in Portsmouth to see how the ABAE is working with schools to deliver the ASDAN CoPE qualification.
Keith said: "I am impressed by the partnership the ABAE has forged with schools in Portsmouth. Having spent time talking with the young people on the ASDAN GCSE course at Charter Academy, it's obvious they are fully engaged with the sport and are very proud of their achievements.
