Neville Cole 60kg (Fitzroy Lodge ABC) was to be a future Olympian at the 1972 Games (Munich, West Germany).   David Needham 51kg (Nottingham School of Boxing ABC) and John Conteth 75kg (Kirkby ABC) become Commonwealth Champions in 1970 (Edinburgh, Scotland) as does losing Finalist Tommy Imrie 71kg (Buccleuch BC) for Scotland.

The weight of Light Fly (48kg) is introduced for the first at the Championships.  

 

Michael Kingwell 64kg (Robert Browning ABC) and Leslie Stevens 91kg (Reading ABC) both win European Bronze Medals in 1971 (Madrid, Spain).   Leslie Stevens 91kg (Reading ABC) wins his first ABA National title after securing a Commonwealth Bronze Medal in 1970 (Edinburgh, Scotland.   Ralph Evans 51kg (Waterlooville ABC) and Finalist becomes a future Olympia in 1972 (Munich, West Germany) and wins an Olympic Bronze Medal.   Along with ABA Champion George Turpin 54kg (Golden Gloves ABC) and Alan Minter 75kg (Crawley ABC).   William Taylor 54kg (Repton ABC) Finalist also becomes an Olympian in 1972.

Neville Cole 64kg (Fitzroy Lodge ABC) wins his third and last title (1970, 1972, 1973).   Micky Abrams 48kg (Battersea ABC) wins his third consecutive title (1971, 1972, 1973).   Francis Lucas 75kg (Sir Philip Game ABC) was not selected for the 1974 Commonwealth Games (Christchurch, New Zealand) so represented St. Vincent and Windward Islands and won Gold!!!   Pat Cowdell 54kg (Warley ABC), William Knight 81kg (Lynn ABC) and Neville Meade 91kg (Royal Air Force) all became Commonwealth Champions in 1972 - ABA Finalists, Robert Davies 71kg (Birkenhead ABC) and Carl Spear 75kg (Golden Gloves ABC) both win Commonwealth Bronze Medals.

This is Pat Cowdell's 57kg (Warley ABC) third ABA National title and at (3) weights; 54kg (1973), 60kg (1975) and 57kg (1978).   Slyvester Mittee 60kg (Repton ABC), Clinton McKenzie 64kg (Sir Philip Game ABC) and Colin Jones 67kg (Penyrheol ABC) all win their first ABA National titles.   Jones will go on and win the title in 1977 and become an Olympian.

The 1978 Commonwealth Games (Edmonton, Canada) saw Joseph Awome 91kg (Woking ABC) become Commonwealth Champion.   Moss O'Brien 57kg (Repton ABC) won a Bronze Medal.   The 1978 Championships witnessed the introduction of 'seedings' at the semi-final stage thereby keeping the (2) English boxers apart.   Terry Marsh 60kg (Royal Navy) wins the first of his (3) ABA National titles.   This year at 60kg and at 67kg in 1980, 1981.   Herol Graham 75kg (Radford Boys ABC) continues with his winning ways.

Venue:                     Wembley Arena, London

 

For only the second time, (2) brothers win an ABA National title in the same year, Ray (51kg) and George Gilbody (60kg) both of St Helen's Star ABC.   The first being John (60kg) and Robert Hair (75kg) both of North London ABC in 1887.   Peter Hanlon 57kg (Gloucester ABC) had won an under (19) European Silver Medal in 1978 (Dublin, Ireland).   It is believed that Joey Frost 67kg of the 'Famous' Rotunda ABC recorded the fastest ever stoppage in an ABA National Final.   Recorded at (15) seconds.
