The first time ever the ABA National Championships were to be held outside London.   It returned to London in 1945 until 1996.   Not a single contestant from the 1939 Finals appeared in 1944 Finals.

58th ABA National Championships

 

1944 - 1945

Venue:    Royal Albert Hall, London

 

Alex Watson 81kg (Leith Victoria BC) won (10) Scottish ABA titles as well as (2) English ABA Championships (1945, 1947).   The famous Randolph Turpin 69kg (Leamington Spa ABC) wins his first National title, winning again in 1946.   Turpin is still the only person to win both a Junior and Senior ABA National Championship in the same year aged (17).   He went onto beat 'Sugar Ray Robinson' to become World Middleweight Champion.   One of only (2) defeats the American ever experienced.

Venue:    Wembley Arena, London

 

The ABA Finals go to the Wembley Arena (London).   It will be home until 1995.   J. Ryan (Army) went onto win the 1947 European Championship Gold in Dublin (Ireland) and (1) other ABA title in 1947.   Pat (H) Floyd 91kg (Polytechnic ABC) wins his last of his (4) titles.   His first was in 1929!

 

Peter Brander 57kg (Slough Centre ABC) wins the second of his (4) titles (1945, 1946, 1948, 1950).
